In a recent interview with Dream Up magazine in France, Bill talks a lot about the new album, a bit about the fans, and about Perez Hilton’s accusation about the band. “OUR NEW ALBUM WILL SURPRISE YOU!”
Being rather seclusive for awhile, the 4 prodigies from Magdeburg are holed up in a studio to finish their third album. This precious jewel is expected to come out next spring. Between two takes, Bill offers his insights on the situation.
You have not been around, lately.Yes, we were in studio to record our third album. It was a very intense and creative period but at the same time, it offered a much needed break for the band. We were able to come together, far away from our usual hectic life. In the studio, each one of us was alone with his thoughts and doubts. The moment that we’re away from the spotlight is essential for a band. We’ve returned to the things that really matter.
In what kind of state of mind did you approach the new recording?
There are a lot of new influences that until now, have not been heard in the sound of Tokio Hotel. Even so, we’ve kept the same crew. Our new album will probably surprise a lot of people and I hope the fans will love it.
How did you work?The lyrics and music is the result of our lives since the success of the band. They handle about our mood, new thoughts and reflections, and also new wishes and hopes. I’ve started writing some new lyrics in the summer of 2007. Many lyrics were finished while we were on the road, doing tours and just traveling around. There’s one lyric that goes specifically about my home sickness during our tour in the States and goes about all the things I’ve missed. That’s why the album will be in German although there will be an English version also.
How does a song gets created precisely?In the beginning, it’s just loose thoughts and scattered ideas. Then, the music gets more defined, sometimes even without really realizing it. The moment that the chorus is set, the song really starts to take shape. At that moment, it has to get recorded. A song is too fragile to let it slip away.
Do you have many discussions (within the band) before you start recording?Yes, the moment we’re ready to start recording, things become difficult. We have a song but there are many different ways to interpret the song. And we have to find the best interpretation. We, then start to experiment with each song by changing the guitar-sounds or modifying my voice. And yes, that can easily lead to huge discussions. And what worries me a bit is the fact that I’m a huge perfectionist, bordering on the obsessive. Luckily, my other three friends don’t have the same character (laughs).
Do you feel pressured by your fans?We try to escape the pressure by making sure we can travel peacefully. But the greatest pressure comes from ourselves. Of course, the reaction of the fans is very important also because we do not want to disappoint them. But we don’t want to let ourselves down either. We do listen to other advice but the final decision is always taken by us. It’s something between the four of us.
Recently, the celebrity blogger Perez Hilton wrote that your concerts were playback shows. What’s your comment on that?It’s not the first time that I hear such bull about Tokio Hotel, or some other bands. We’re in the heat of things and our success elicits jealousy. And those kind of mediaflashs are part of the game. It’s a deceitful attack since the famous Perez Hilton has no proof to substantiate his accusations. Like our manager David Jost said, “The best way to form an opinion is to come to our shows and watch us play.” And we really, really rock!

I prodigiosi 4 di Magdeburg sono chiusi nello studio per finire il loro terzo album. Questo prezioso gioiello è aspettato per la prossima primavera. Fra due registrazioni, Bill offre le sue opinioni sulla situazione.
Non siete stati in giro ultimamente.Sì, siamo stati in studio per registrare il terzo album. E' stato veramente un periodo intenso e creativo ma allo stesso tempo ha offerto una pausa necessaria per la band. Eravamo abituati a stare sempre insieme, lontani dalle nostre vite, In studio, ognuno di noi è solo con i propri pensieri e dubbi. Il momento in cui siamo lontani dai media è essenziale per la band. Siamo ritornati alle cose veramente importanti.
Qual è stata la mentalità con il nuovo album?Ci sono un sacco di nuove influenze adesso che non si sono mai sentite nel sound dei Tokio Hotel. Non per niente abbiamo mantenuto la stessa squadra. Probabilmente il nostro nuovo album soprenderà molta gente e spero che le fans lo amino.
Come hai lavorato?Le canzoni e le musiche sono il risultato delle nostre vite dal successo della band ad ora. Trattano del nostro umore, di nuovi pensieri e riflessioni, e anche di nuovi desideri e speranze. Ho iniziato a scrivere nuove canzoni nell'estate del 2007. Molte canzoni sono state finite mentre eravamo "on the road", mentre facevamo i tour o semplicemente mentre viaggiavamo.
C' è una canzone in particolare che parla della mia nostalgia di casa durante il nostro tour negli States e di tutte le cose che mi mancavano. Questo è il perchè l'album sarà in Tedesco e dopo ci sarà anche una versione in Inglese.
Come si fa precisamente a creare una canzone?All'inizio, è solo un avere idee e pensieri. Dopo, bisogna definire la musica, a volte senza veramente averla realizzata. Nel momento in cui il coro è impostato, la canzone comincia a definirsi. In quel momento è pronta per essere registrata. Una canzone è troppo fragile per essere slittata via.
Voi avete molte discussioni (con la band) prima di iniziare a registrare?Si, nel momento in cui iniziamo a registrare, le cose diventano difficili. Noi abbiamo una canzone ma ci sono numerosi modi differenti di intepretarla. E noi dobbiamo trovare la migliore interpretazione. Quindi iniziamo a sperimentare con ogni canzone cambiando il sound della chitarra o modificando la mia voce. E si, questo può facilmente condurre a grandi discussioni. Quello che mi preoccupa un pò è il fatto che sono un grande perfezionista, rasento l'ossessione. Fortunatamente, gli altri miei tre amici non hanno lo stesso carattere (risate).
Vi sentite sotto pressione a causa dei fan?Noi cerchiamo di sfuggire alla pressione cercando di viaggiare tranquillamente. Ma la maggiore pressione viene da noi stessi. Certo, la reazione dei fan è molto importante anche perchè noi non vogliamo deluderli. Non vogliamo buttarci giù a vicenda. Ascoltiamo i consigli degli altri, ma la decisione finale è sempre presa da noi. E' qualcosa tra noi quattro.
Recentemente, il celebre blogger Perez Hilton ha scritto che i vostri concerti erano in playback. Qual è la vostra opinione su questo?Non è la prima volta che sento tali bufale sui Tokio Hotel, o su qualche altra band. Noi siamo nel fervore delle cose e il nostro successo suscita gelosia. Questo genere di notizie dei media sono una parte del gioco. E' un attacco disonesto, in quanto il famoso Perez Hilton non ha prove per sostenere la sua accusa. Come il nostro manager David Jost ha detto, "Il miglior modo di farsi un'opinione è venire ai nostri show e guardarci suonare." Noi siamo veramente, veramente forti!
